Ardagh Metal Packaging plans $200m beverage can plant in Northern Ireland

Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) has announced an investment of $200m for the construction of a beverage can plant in Northern Ireland.

The plant, which will be located at Global Point near Belfast, is expected to cater to the evolving requirements of the company’s beverage customers in Ireland, the UK and Europe.

The company is currently at the pre-planning application stage with regard to the project and is talks with local stakeholders.

While the exact number of employment opportunities is yet to be finalised, the new facility is expected to create a significant number of full-time jobs for technicians and engineers, besides other roles.

More details of the plant are expected to be announced by AMP over the coming months.

The investment forms part of AMP’s investment programme which looks to develop ‘new, infinitely recyclable, metal packaging capacity’ in North America, Brazil and Europe.

AMP CEO Oliver Graham said: “This exciting project is an important part of AMP’s global investment programme. We are delighted to be investing in Northern Ireland supporting our clients' sustainability needs and further reducing our carbon footprint by locating capacity closer to our end customers.”

AMP Europe CEO David Spratt said: “We plan to have the new state of the art plant operational during 2023 and we expect to commence recruitment in 2022.”

Spratt also said that the investment is supported by key customers of the company and will have capacity for further expansion to support additional growth in customer demand.

AMP, which is majority-owned by Ardagh Group, operates 23 production facilities across nine countries. It has over 5,000 employees.
