Willmott Dixon to deliver €21m ultra-sustainable school in UK

Willmott Dixon has been selected to build a ?21m ultra-sustainable school, Tarleton Academy, in Preston, UK.

The new school, which offers learning environment for 750 pupils, will be built on land adjacent to the existing school.

The existing school is planned to be remain in use until September 2023 when the new building is due to open.

Procured using the Department for Education (DfE) construction framework, the new Tarleton Academy will comprise 36 classrooms and sports facilities such as a 20m swimming pool, new fitness suite and multi-use games area.

Willmott Dixon North managing director Anthony Dillon said: “We are delighted to be working with the Department for Education at Tarleton Academy to deliver a world class learning environment, which will be net zero carbon in operation and benefit from our extensive EnergySynergy performance monitoring process to reduce costs.

“Sustainability is at the forefront of our business and through our 2030 ‘Now or Never’ sustainability strategy, we have pledged that by the end of 2030 all our new buildings and major refurbishments will achieve net zero operational carbon.”

The new academy will feature an enhanced building envelope designed to maximise air tightness in addition to triple glazed windows.

Additional features of the project include renewable energy generation comprising air source heat pumps and ground source.

The building’s roof will be equipped with 1,500m2 photovoltaic solar panels.

Willmott Dixon said that the Tarleton Academy will benefit from the firm’s EnergySynergy process, which allows to compare actual energy performance of the project after the delivery, with energy performance targeted at the design phase. This will be carried out for a period of two-three years.

Willmott Dixon earlier delivered UK’s first Passivhaus ‘Plus’ education facility, Hackbridge Primary School. It is designed to consume only 75% of the 100% renewable energy it generates. The remaining energy sold back to the grid.
