Singapore’s LTA awards $780m civil contract for Cross Island Line Phase 1

Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a contract, worth $780m, for the design and construction of tunnels between Aviation Park station and Changi East Depot.

A joint venture (JV) between Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Singapore) and LT Sambo (Singapore Branch) has been awarded the contract under the first phase of the Cross Island Line (CRL1).

Under the terms of the contract, the JV will be responsible for the construction of 6km-long tunnels under Aviation Park Road, at about 20m depth below the ground level.

These tunnels are expected to be approximately 40m deep compared with other stations.

Work on the tunnels is anticipated to commence this month and passenger service for the line between Aviation Park station and Changi East Depot is scheduled to begin in 2030.

Singapore’s eighth MRT line, CRL will serve the existing and future developments in the eastern, western, and north-eastern corridors connecting major hubs including Jurong Lake District, Punggol Digital District and Changi region.

The 29km-long CRL1 includes 12 stations from Aviation Park to Bright Hill. It will serve the industrial and residential areas in Pasir Ris, Loyang, Defu, Hougang, Tampines, Serangoon North, and Ang Mo Kio.

More than 100,000 households are expected to benefit from the project.

Furthermore, common recreational spaces such as Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and Changi Beach Park will also be more accessible by the public transport.

Previously, Shanghai Tunnel Engineering was involved in the construction of Buona Vista station along the Circle Line and Newton station along Downtown Line.

The company is now working on the Bayshore station construction along the Thomson-East Coast Line as well as on the construction of road tunnels between Sin Ming Avenue and Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 for the North South Corridor (NSC).

At present, LT Sambo is also working on road tunnels between Novena Rise and Toa Payoh Rise for the NSC.
