L&T Construction wins contract to extend mainline corridor of Mauritius Metro

L&T Construction’s Transportation Infrastructure business has won a contract order, valued in the range of Rs 10bn-Rs25bn ($185m -$462.9), from Metro Express Limited (MEL) to extend the mainline corridor of the Mauritius Metro by 3.4km.

Under this contract, L&T Construction will build a completely integrated light rail-based Urban Transit System from Rose Hill Interchange towards Ebene reaching Reduit near the University of Mauritius, reported IANS.

The 3.4km extension of the mainline corridor of the Mauritius Metro will link the highly populated areas of Ebene Cybercity and the University of Mauritius and is expected to boost the development of the island nation, stated L&T Construction in a regulatory filing.

"The extension will involve the construction of three new stations, viaducts and bridges, track works, DC electric traction systems, Ticketing and passenger information systems and integration with road traffic through advanced signaling systems," it said.

L&T is currently working on the 26km Mainline LRT network, linking Curepipe to Immigration Square in Port Louis.

Meanwhile, L&T commenced construction work of the Mumbai - Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Line project, which passes through the Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

In late January, the Heavy Civil Infrastructure business of L&T Construction had won a contract for two packages - P4(X) and P4(Y) of this high-speed rail corridor project, popularly known as bullet train project.

The contract size is close to Rs 15bn ($277,7m), reported Business Standard, citing a person close to the matter.

Under the contract, L&T will be responsible for procurement, fabrication, assembly, painting and transportation of 28 bridges to several locations that will cross over rivers, roads,  railway lines and other structures.
