Leeds City Council approves plans for new terminal at Leeds Bradford Airport in UK

Leeds City Council has granted approval to the plans of constructing a new terminal at the Leeds Bradford Airport in the UK.

The proposed plans for the project, which is estimated to cost approximately ?150m, involves replacement of outdated existing terminal building with a new sustainable development.

The work on the project will include construction of a new three-storey, 34,000m2 terminal on an alternative site within the airport’s boundary. It also includes construction of the support infrastructure for the new terminal building.

Leeds Bradford Airport annually handles approximately four million passengers and has already secured permission to increase that to seven million over a 10-year-period.

The expansion proposals have created controversy since they were first announced in January 2020, reported BBC.

The proposal was reportedly objected on the grounds of climate change, while the supporters said that the expansion would bring in economic benefits.

Airport chairman Andy Clarke said: “Our scheme will provide significant improvements, benefits to the regional economy and an improved passenger experience.”

Scheduled to be opened in 2023, the project is expected to create nearly 850 jobs during the construction phase and support 12,650 permanent jobs across the Leeds City Region.

Local Democracy Reporting Service quoted Leeds University climate scientist Jefim Vogel as saying: “It is like road-building, you build another road and there will be more cars on the road overall. Airport expansion drives demand for flights.”

Additionally, the government’s advisory climate change panel stated that the emissions from aviation must not increase.

According to the Leeds City Council, the planning approval is subject to some conditions and changes and, once these are agreed, the plans would be submitted to the government to take a final decision.
