BAM wins design and build contract for pathology laboratory in Leeds, UK

BAM Construction has been appointed as the design and build contractor for a new ?27m pathology laboratory at St James’s Hospital in Leeds, the UK.

The latest move follows a competitive process conducted under the government’s capital framework for health, called Procure22.

The new laboratory will also provide pathology services to hospitals in West Yorkshire and Harrogate.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust will bring its pathology services together into a single purpose-built advanced laboratory.

The company stated that the construction of the new laboratory is part of Leeds Teaching Hospitals’ Building the Leeds Way programme, which is a long-term vision to transform healthcare facilities in the Trust for patients and staff.

Slated to be completed in 2023, the new facility will accommodate the latest equipment and specialist technology and will include engagement with service users in hospitals across Leeds, West Yorkshire and Harrogate.

Some of the services currently housed in outdated facilities located in the Old Medical School at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) will be moved to the new laboratory.

BAM has already started work on designs for the new facility, which will be designed for quick, precise, routine and specialist testing.

The company stated that the work has already commenced on a new adults’ hospital as well as a new home for Leeds Children’s Hospital at the Leeds General Infirmary site.

Work on the project is expected commenced later this year, with completion slated in late Spring 2023.

BAM Preconstruction director Paul Cleminson said: “This pathology project allows us to build on that trust and understanding that that our expertise in modern methods of construction, carbon net zero and smart digital technologies can deliver a true future-proofed building serving needs across West Yorkshire and Harrogate.

“There has been a demanding programme but we are on track. This scheme has the potential to push the boundaries of what digital construction can achieve, so we are very excited about not only the benefits it will bring for local people but also, what can be learned to help us all improve all healthcare buildings.”
